My interest in paper collectibles, previously focused on stamp collecting, has expanded into a new area: playing cards.
Turns out there is a whole industry out there, a few years old, focused on designing and creating a wide variety of playing cards featuring updated, modern designs, many paying homage to classic cards from the past. While not evident with this deck, many of the designs feature intricately designed, embossed tuck boxes. (I’ll share some examples in the future.)
Besides the fancy tuck boxes, the new designs focus on updating the face cards, as well as other aspects of card design, including the pips and backs.
These photos are from one of my first acquisitions, the Solstice deck from the Lunatica series by Thirdway Industries. (Yes, one of their marketing tricks is to make an entire series of decks, ranging in price from that’s a bit high to are you kidding! Sales are your friend, as is being satisfied with partial sets.)
I love these cards and have more on order from the same designer; photos coming!
This post features the entire set of royalty, close-ups of the spade face cards, as well as a shot of a surprising feature: the cards are fluorescent!
